Phase Transitions and Ising Models

In this module we study phase transitions through the lens of Ising models — the “hydrogen atom” of statistical mechanics. We begin with a bird’s-eye view of phases, critical phenomena, and universality, then develop Monte Carlo and Markov Chain Monte Carlo methods to simulate these systems numerically. The module concludes with mean field theory, which provides analytical insight into phase transitions and serves as a bridge to more advanced approaches like Landau theory.
